## Distributed inference reliability begins with the failure boundary

Distinguish replica recovery, control-plane recovery and regional failover, and specify the evidence needed before publishing availability claims.

### One model, several kinds of distribution

An application may use independent model replicas, a single model sharded across devices, separate prefill/decode pools or several regions. These are different failure boundaries. Before drawing a resilient network, specify which components must remain available for an individual request to complete.

For the proposed reliability record, map gateway, authentication, model/version registry, router, engine, cache transfer and infrastructure dependencies. Classify a failure by its effect: rejection before execution, a delayed first token, a stalled stream, interrupted generation or inability to recover capacity. Availability of a web endpoint alone does not demonstrate successful inference.

### Healthy replicas do not settle control-plane recovery

Ray Serve's documentation distinguishes replica recovery from worker and head-node recovery. Its KubeRay path for Global Control Store fault tolerance requires external state; it also describes limits while that control plane is recovering. A framework's automatic actor restart is not evidence that every cluster dependency tolerates failure.

For a future test, separate a replica crash from node loss, coordinator loss and state-store loss. Confirm whether already healthy replicas continue serving and whether the system can replace another failure during recovery. Record recovery time and user-visible outcomes. Do not label the whole service highly available solely because the process manager restarts an unhealthy worker.

### Place replicas across meaningful domains

Kubernetes documentation distinguishes voluntary disruptions from failures such as hardware loss and network partition. PodDisruptionBudgets can limit some voluntary disruptions but cannot prevent involuntary failures. It recommends replication and spreading across racks or zones for higher availability.

For an inference deployment, record physical and logical placement rather than only replica count. Two replicas depending on the same node, power path or control service may not provide the intended independence. Pair a placement policy with an admission-capacity calculation: after losing a domain, the surviving service still needs enough qualified capacity for the declared workload.

### A regional router must respect eligibility

Fireworks' dated multi-region architecture article distinguishes global workload placement from request-path routing, and retains accelerator, governance and residency boundaries. It explicitly states that removing a scheduler round trip does not remove network distance. These are provider-authored architectural descriptions, not Aguasto results or a guarantee that every multi-region service behaves similarly.

Use the same distinction in a conceptual Aguasto diagram. Define eligible regions before selecting the nearest healthy capacity. Consider model revision, precision, tokenizer, task behavior and permitted data locations. A failover destination should be compatible and ready; a dot on a map is not sufficient operational evidence.

### Streaming failures require application decisions

A proposed recovery policy should distinguish a failure before any content is returned from a failure after a partial stream. Set bounded retries, retry budgets and deadlines. If a request invokes tools or external side effects, design replay and idempotency at the application boundary rather than assuming that regenerating text safely repeats the entire action.

Record whether a replacement attempt starts from the prompt or can consume verified compatible state. The test matrix should include timeouts, queue saturation, network interruption, version mismatch and a partial response. Document what the user receives and how billing or token accounting treats incomplete attempts. These are design requirements pending an executed deployment test.

### Prove reliability with a workload and a period

Before publishing an availability figure, define the numerator, denominator, period, excluded conditions and user outcome. Distinguish successful HTTP acceptance from completed latency-qualified inference. Keep scheduled maintenance and deployment behavior visible. Pair the result with an actual failure-exercise record and capacity observations.

Aguasto has not verified an operating distributed inference service or an SLA. This guide is a practical acceptance method for planned infrastructure and potential technical collaborations. Its central decision is which failure the design intends to tolerate, what reserve capacity remains, and which observed evidence would support a commercial reliability statement.

### Scope & limitations

- Conceptual reliability methodology; no Aguasto availability measurement or SLA exists.

- Third-party recovery features are configuration dependent.

- Geographic replicas do not imply a geographically sharded model or uninterrupted cache transfer.
